Custom mirror by Island Decor in the Keys of Tavernier

This is one of our favorite customers.  They remodeled their Keys home and added a lot of space in preparation for their retirement.  And then they retired and remodeled it a little more.  This mirror was the final touch.  We looked for something commercially available for months.  Then we looked for something custom for more months.  We finally found someone who found someone who personally collected the shells on a beach near Sanibel; then measured and sketched a layout for the customer's approval and hand glued every shell in its own artful place; then she drove it to the Keys and hung it.  Many thanks to Shanti at Island Decor in Tavernier for making the mirror happen: www.islanddecorinthekeys.com

I like the asymmetry that balances the asymmetry of the vanity sink but I really like the simplicity and restraint of the final, overall composition shown in the photo:  the shell fragments that occur in the countertop, the quiet colors, the excellent light.  This could have turned out tacky retro - shell mirror on pastel wall with terrazzo top - but it didn't.  There's something unexpected and 21st century Florida about it.
